Craft your environment carefully
The nature vs nurture debate is one discussed widely.
Do genetics or environment effect an individual’s personality and behavioural traits?
Bit of a chicken answer but I think it’s both.
But in today’s piece let’s discuss the nurture concept and why we should really think about crafting our environment carefully.
I want to discuss this because we have ultimate control over this whereas it can be argued that our biology is more restrictive.
Denzel Washington said “If you hang around 5 confident people, you will be the 6th. If you hang around with 5 intelligent people, you will be the 6th”.
Those we choose to surround ourselves with play a huge impact in the construction of our values, morals and overall thought processes.
No matter how strong willed you believe you are, all it takes is prolonged exposure to see a difference in yourself (the way you act and think). We’ve seen examples of this with celebrities or maybe you have people in your personal life you can relate this to.
Not only is it important to assess your physical surroundings but also your digital life since we spend large amounts of time in the digital realm. The social media algorithms feed you what you want to see (metrics being which posts you spend the most time watching/ engaging with) so if your feed is filled with posts that carry no value then it might be time to look inward since you played a part in this.
My main social media accounts got so bad (they still are when I check them lol) that I have whole new accounts that strictly feed me with personal development content that are worth my time.
Maybe it’s time for you to do something similar. Or maybe not…
Reflecting and thinking about it should be the bare minimum though.
Yes, you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with but you also become the average of the social media accounts you follow. Let’s not underestimate either.
Please do think on this.
